Home Economist- Florence Ferden 4H Aide – Grace Johnson Office Assistant – Fran Olson -Severe hail storm by Elk Creek Church – June 20th – Hail Clinic by Dale Studt in the Elk Creek area -Grain Drying/Handling/Storage Meeting – Grafton on July 11 with 51 present- Extension specialists Dale Studt and Larry Van Fossen presented -Karl Griffith (area livestock specialist) worked with 3 area farmers on Swine Enterprise Records -“Raising of Calves” – program with Winnebago Extension-25 attended -Countywide swine meeting-in Manly Dec. 14-sow management and health-25 attended Area& state Extension personnel Karl Griffith, Dr. John Berthelsen, Dr. Emmett Stevemer presented -Swine Show by Pork Producers at Wo Co Fair, annual banquet=325 people -Cattlemen’s Association reorganized and incorporated -Crop Production Meetings – 38 people Jan. 31 (all day session) Two half day sessions- at Grafton (32 attended) and Hanlontown (65 attended) on corn and soybeans by Dale Studt -Beef and Cow Clinic in March-10% of cow producers in county attended, Presenters were Karl Griffith, Don Hoffstrand, Dr.Bill Zmolek and Earl Trenhaile -Swine Innovator’s Seminar in Mason City-one of the featured producers- Alan Stevens -NIAD area activities: Pro Ag Mtg. Ag Chemical Dealer’s Mtg. Poultry Producer’s Mtg. Area Custom Spray Operator’s Training Lady Landowner’s School 1973 Weed and Insect Control mailed to Wo. Co. farmers Soil and Water Conservation Wo. Co. Soil Survey completed- meeting held to learn how to use the information 2 workshops- Drainage/Tile-presenteres were Dale Studt, Don Hoffstrand, Jim Kuhlman, Paul Ohland Director Kuhlman has assisted local farmers and land owners on an individual basis in analyzing their farms using soil survey data. Charles Lehman had first beef cattle waste management set up in the area – fall 1972 Marketing Marketing Program (first time in Wo. Co.) – Bob Wisner spoke to 35 people Improved Family Living Consumer Competence -packaged programs to the schools -radio/TV“How Do You Rate as a Consumer” -“How to Use the Electric Blender”-200 attended -“Blender Magic” booklet to 1,200 -“Come to Grips with your Money”-mailed series to 9 families -“How to be a Mrs. Fix-It” -80 attended -“Sewing Carnival”-630 in the area attended in Mason City -Newsletters-300 receive “New Horizons” for senior citizens, 125 receive “Hello Homemakers” and 475 receive “Current” the consumer newsletter -Radio-25 minute program once a month on KRIB and KSMN Home Economist F. Ferden presented: 7 Ways to Cut the Heat Bill Buying Life Insurance Eat Right and have Money Left Handling Financial Affairs for Older Parents Mistakes in Family Money Management Cleaning Ovens Microwaves Buying Dinnerware Selecting Pots and Pans Organic Food Kick Improved Nutrition -Food Assistance Brochure developed with various agencies in county Pesticide Safety and Emergency Preparedness -Distributed items to mass media 4H and Youth (Grace Johnson-4H aide) 4H Garden Project-24 gardens inspected -Local achievement show -Judging training for fairs by Home Economist -Fitting and Showing Demo – 65 attended-645 home economics exhibits at the Wo. Co. Fair (449 in home improvement, 108 food, 43 clothing, 46 knitting) -20 presentations at county fair -Pizza Stand at county fair by county council -Teen Dance at fair -16 on county council -4H Day Camp at Pilot Knob-55 attended -Members of county council (on pg. 11) -Attended 4H Conference in Ames (pg. 11) 9 attended -visited 4th gr. Classes….4H co.council members and Grace Johnson (50 new members obtained) -radio tapes and TV by club members: Joan Julseth, John Tenold, OLger Tenold family, Cyndy Hagen, Mary Nell Burdick, Carol Kruse -4H Food and Nutrition trainings for senior girl members -4H Newsletter – The Clover Carrier…by Grace Johnson on a regular basis -Leader’s Banquet-1st time -Rally Night-June 28 -Chicago Trip Winners -Roller Skate Party at Clear Lake-April -4H Project Leaders -Lynn Schaub-Safety Course to 6 boys -Good feeling in community about 4H Program 1972-73 Community Development -“The Future of the Small Town”-Extension Economist Eber Eldridge as speaker-52 attended -3 programs to Nwd. Lion’s Club by Cerro Gordo Ext. Director- got the Community Betterment Program going and also TUNE –Total United Northwood Effort -Park and cemetery landscaping with extension specialist meeting with city council (Nwd.) (300 trees planted) -Grafton –second time winner of Community Betterment Award in Iowa -Program on population data in area -Delivered Meals in Manly-Wo. Co. Rural Development Committee -Interstate 35 ribbon cutting – Extension Service assisted Dec. 12 -Estate Planning Program March 6 in Northwood-150 came to hear Dr. Neal Harl Environmental Improvement -Beef and Swine waste management systems-working with Soil Conservation Service The Extension Service -same staff members as previous year -Officers of Extension Council for 1973 |
